You also know how import- ant it is to monitor them. If withdrawals exceed deposits, you end up with a negative balance, possibly incurring a fee or the closing of your account. So you track them regularly to ensure everything stays balanced. But do you take the same time and care with your energy account? Do you even have one? Do you monitor it to make sure it stays balanced and not depleted? You create your energy account with deposits: Taking time to rest and rebalance your life. You make withdrawals as you pursue your life and work activities. is account is o en imbalanced, but unlike your bank accounts, it will not be closed. In fact, most of us keep on spending (working) beyond our means, which causes burnout. 1 Work-related burnout is a growing crisis among today's physi- cians. e AMA and the Mayo Clinic recently surveyed 6,880 physicians nationwide to evaluate the prevalence of burnout and physicians' satisfaction with work-life balance compared to the general U.S. population relative to 2011 and 2014. "At the time of that (2011) study, approximately 45 percent of U.S. physicians met criteria for burnout," the authors wrote. "When a follow-up survey was conducted in 2014, 54.4 percent of physicians reported at least one sign of burnout. Physicians also reported lower rates of satisfaction with work-life balance in 2014 compared to a similar sample of physicians in 2011." Physicians are suffering from depleted 'energy accounts.'
